The 100 Day Project Challenge 2020.
(read time 3 minutes)
Another year of the 100-day Project Challenge on Instagram completed!
And it has been the best year yet. I have seen such a big development in my artwork over the last 100 days, including taking my paintings into 3D forms, the exploration of colour and being more expressive with my mark-making.
What is The 100 Day Project?
It is a creative challenge that occurs every year on Instagram and its all about the community. For 100 days you create something towards your project and post a photo on your Instagram feed. Use the hashtag #the100dayproject so that others can see what you’ve made and you can check out what others are creating too.
Why I love the project.
It helps me build the habit of creating everyday
My creativity increases and has long-lasting effects after the project has finished
An opportunity to experiment and play with new ideas and materials
Curious to see what new inspiration emerges and where I take it
Get to connect with like-minded creatives and find new people to follow
New inspiration this year.
3D Paintings.
It all started by upcycling three cardboard toilet roll tubes. At the time there was a shortage of toilet paper here in the UK when Covid-19 lockdown started, it was the holy grail if you could find any! So, to decorate these humble objects into something desirable appealed. I liked how the shapes also gave me something to respond to as I painted.
Being bolder with colour.
I've always loved working with colour, yet didn't realise that colour exploration would become one of my main focuses this year. I love playing with different colour combinations and exploring tones, shades, values and how they interact together.
This year has all been about introducing Red! In the past, I have found red paint heavy and dense, but finding the right shade has been a game-changer. I call it Geranium Red with its lightness, freshness and uplifting qualities. I couldn't be without it now.
Free-flowing mark making.
Expressing movement with marks is a joy and letting loose is so freeing and stress-reducing. It puts energy into a piece of work implying unconformity and imperfection. As a reforming perfectionist (it's a constant work in progress) becoming comfortable with imperfections is a positive growth curve for me.
What's next
The main thing is for me to continue to enjoy creating the work that I do as I believe people viewing my work can sense that joy. Bringing happiness and brightening peoples day through my creativity is a core value of my work.
